Santa Fe physician J.R. Damron was elected chair of the New Mexico Health Exchange board of directors at the board’s first meeting Monday.

Farmington city councilor and businessman Jason Sandel was elected vice chair of the 13-member board during the meeting in Albuquerque.

Both members were blunt in their assessment of the exchange’s mission of trying to get the online insurance marketplace operational by Oct. 1.

Damron, a radiologist at the University of New Mexico Medical Center, called the job “Herculean,” while Sandel said it was “monumental.”

The board has six months to develop an operational plan for the exchange. Damron said the board might want to build on the work the New Mexico Health Insurance Alliance has already done on building an exchange.
