UNM Student Shares His Story for All to Hear

Nathan Lihte Carlisle Avenue, Albuquerque created on Wed October 16, 2013

I am currently a student at the University of New Mexico. Born and Raised. I do have health insurance right now. I ugh, receive it through my parents. Receiving health insurance has been a huge benefit over the last year. I bet, last fall, fall of 2012I began to have some health issues that required some medical attention. A number of tests that would normally cost a lot of money; a few visits to the emergency room, and etc. That if I hadn’t had health insurance for all these I would have been in debt 10’s of thousands of dollars probably and certainly would have had to drop out of school.

I think there is a desire and a definite need for students to get health insurance and it’s available now through the ACA, as of Oct. 1 you can go online to bewellnm.com and look up different insurance options that can be available to for a really affordable price. UNM or college students in general, are not the wealthiest people, I know I’m not, so getting insurance that’s affordable is really important. And I think sometimes that were young and healthy but as I’ve learned anything can happen at any time and it’s really important to get health insurance.

I think there is very little factual information out there about what the affordable care act actually is and does. I think there is a strong lack of information out there. Students really need to be more informed, in my experience.
