Resume and Job Interview Tips

How to Write a Resume:

A nice resume is a great way to introduce yourself to a potential employer and get noticed. Is this your first resume? Not to worry — check out the guide and links below for some tips.

  1. Name and Contact Information: At the top of your resume, put your full name. Just below, place your address, phone number, and email address (if you have one). Bold this section, and center it.

  1. Education: Below your contact information, put where you go to school, when you expect to graduate, and include your GPA if it is a 3.0 or above.

  1. Experiences: List each experience as a header. They can be things like work experience, babysitting, mowing lawns, or volunteering, etc. Below each experience title, include a brief description of what you did (either with bullets, in a list, or in sentences). Be sure to use lots of active verbs — see below for a list of ideas!

  1. Activities: This is just a list of other things you may want to include that are not necessarily the same as an “experience.” They can be things like clubs, organizations, volunteering, relevant classes you have taken, etc.

  1. Awards: List any awards or recognition you may have received.

  1. References: Include “References available upon request” or a list of 2-3 people who can talk about who you are as a person for a potential employer.

General Tips:

  • Use Times New Roman, Arial, or another simple font at 12 point size
  • Use 1 inch margins
  • Keep the length to about a page
  • Most importantly — proofread, proofread, proofread!
