The Problem
Patients with insurance receive services at a facility that is in their network but the doctors who treat them are out-of-network, and the provider sends the entire bill for medical services directly to the patient. These bills can be hundreds of thousands of dollars.
The Solution
Ban the practice of sending surprise bills to consumers by requiring providers to negotiate directly with the covered person’s insurer rather than billing the consumer for the full cost.
Policy Status
A bill banning the practice of surprise billing was passed in the 2019 legislative session. This policy is being written into state insurance code. For more information email
